As part of (E)ESIC’s Environmental Sustainability and International Cooperation series of seminars (UNESCO Chair in Engineering for Human and Sustainable Development and Engineering for Environmental Sustainability and International Cooperation), the seminar “Mining and environmental conflicts: a challenge for development cooperation” will take place on the 10th of May at 5.30 pm at DICAM (University of Trento), Via Mesiano, Trento, Room 1H.
Scheduled speakers are:
Kyra Grieco (ANR INTERRUPTIONS, Mondes Américains – EHESS) – “Mining and socio-environmental conflict : the case of Peru and of the Cajamarca region” (presenting in person).
Kyra Grieco is an anthropologist specialized in large-scale, open-pit mining activities in Latin America and Europe. Since 2010, she has conducted extensive research on the social and environmental effects of gold and copper mining in northern Peru and on social movements against extraction. More recently, she has started research on the intensification of marble mining in Italy and on projects for the extraction of « strategic » minerals, such as lithium and tungsten, in France. Her approach combines political, environmental and gender anthropology, in order to investigate how contemporary mining transforms relationships between humans and non-humans at the local level.
Flaviano Bianchini (Source International) – “Mining impact on health and environment: the case of Cerro de Pasco in Peru” (presenting in person).
Flaviano Bianchini is an environmentalist and human rights activist. Founder and current executive director of Source International, his work consist in defending communities affected by the harmful consequences of extractive industries. Over more than 15 years he defended more than 40 communities in 26 countries in all continents. In 2018 he has received the Intel Tech Award for the use of technology to benefit humanity in the Silicon Valley. He published three books and he loves climbing and running in the mountains.
After the speakers’ talks, there will be space for an inclusive discussion, and a questions/answers session.
