Aureka is a German start-up company that uses AI to develop digital solutions that create value for society by broadening access to information.
Contribution to Promoting Democracy
Access to information is a cornerstone of democracy. Aureka uses AI to make information available to those that need it to protect their rights, participate in public debates, and drive meaningful change. The company works with civil society organisations, cultural heritage organizations, and the media. Internally, they are building a cooperative company in which all long-term employees will share profit and are involved in shaping the strategy of the business.
Aureka’s project, Lupai, was developed with the non-profit education centre, Lohana Berkins, in Berlin. Lupai is an AI assistant that answers questions about legal and administrative frameworks of migration and labor rights. It allows migrants and precarious workers to know their rights, access reliable information, and connect with experts and organizations that can support them further.
Impact on Promoting Democratic Principles
Since its launch Lupai has been used by thousands of users and it is growing at a steady pace. The project targets the 16 million first generation migrants and the ca. 2500 advisory offices in Germany. It can also be integrated into information portals or internal knowledge bases of civil society organizations. Ten organizations participated in the testing phase in 2024 and reported significant qualitative improvements to their work and around 30% time savings when researching cases that they support. Fifty people with migration experience tested the application and 90% reported to feel more prepared to deal with bureaucracy and 70% indicated that they knew their rights better after using Lupai.
