July 25, 2024, is the date of entry into force of the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. However, the attention of national governments, the business community, academics, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations—both within the EU and globally—has long been focused on this document, as it represents a turning point: human rights and environmental due diligence are becoming mandatory for large companies in the EU, including their chains of activity.
These changes are relevant for Ukraine not only in the context of European integration processes but also because Ukrainian companies are already part of European supply chains. Additionally, the Directive influences investors’ expectations of responsible business practices. Direct references to corporate sustainability due diligence are also included in documents on Ukraine’s recovery.
Special attention in the Directive is given to ensuring responsible conduct by companies operating in situations of armed conflict or other high-risks contexts. This significantly heightens the scrutiny of European partners regarding how European companies and investors operate in Ukraine.
These questions will be the subject of discussion in a series of events:
- Round table: “Responsible business conduct in the programs of recovery of Ukraine and European integration.”
- Academic discussion “Impact of business on human rights, rule of law and democracy: rethinking the role of law in society”.
- Workshop for students “Human rights due diligence in practical situations”.
A series of events will take place in Lviv, at the Ukrainian Catholic University. Participation is possible only offline.
The series of events is supported by the Horizon Europe Rebalance project (#101061342).
