A policy roundtable to discuss the ways through which corporations undermine democratic values, principles, and processes in the EU, and how a more balanced relationship between Member States and large companies can be promoted. Researchers from a consortium of universities leading the Horizon Europe Rebalance Project (Rebalancing democracy & capitalism) will converse with policymakers and NGO leaders about how corporations influence policy making around sustainability issues and what can be done to address it.
The core topics of the roundtable will include:
■ Normative developments on business and human rights: the transposition of the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and new regulatory approaches in the EU;
■ Ecologies of regulatory instruments on business, human rights, and climate change (e.g. CSDDD, Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, Euro7) with a view to exploring the
interactions among private instruments and EU legislative initiatives.
The Roundtable will be organized to include short presentations of preliminary research findings on these topics by the Rebalance team, with policy makers and NGO members providing expert insights to identify and prioritise key findings and develop appropriate policy proposals.
